Scenic background to some, tests of endurance for others, mountains instead are money in the bank to the folks at Calico Rock Milling Inc., a Santa Monica-based company that has turned peaks into pebbles for profit for 38 years.

The company, owned by Santa Monica-based investment firm Palisades Group, uses giant crushers to churn out 70,000 tons of rock per year that end up in driveways, roofs, gardens and a myriad of other uses across the Southland and beyond.
