Flip! Flash! Flow! Brilliant colors of royal blue, red, green, purple, and white radiate through the water like the fluttering, chiffon gown of a ballet dancer. Huge tissue paper-thin thins and tail ripple with the slightest movement. This is the betta splenden.
The betta splenden or Siamese fighting fish is native to the muddy waters of the rice paddies of Southeast Asia. These feisty, little fish have plenty of room to stay out of each other's way in the wild. In captivity, they are kept in separate bowls because the males will fight. The betta of the rice paddies is drab in color with short fins, nothing like the betta of the pet stores.
