Jun. 1--SALEM, Ore. -- Lawmakers penciled next week's special session onto their calendars nine months ago, but now it appears there's almost no chance they'll conduct the tax-reforming business they'd set out to do.
Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, announced Friday that his chamber wouldn't participate after his survey of its members resulted in only 13 of 30 supporting a special session. That virtually guarantees that the most the House could accomplish would amount to political stagecraft, since it takes both chambers to pass bills.
And even if the House's majority Republicans decide to go ahead with a flourish ...
