Jun. 1--LOWELL, Mass. -- The first businessmen laid eyes on the Merrimack River and saw a city of great potential. Their decision to invest became known as the "Lowell Experiment." The rest is industrial history, but factories built by Nathan Appleton and Kirk Boott are now serving a new purpose.
