Cute it's not, but the lamprey - a jawless fish of ancient origin - deserves protection under the federal Endangered Species Act, said a dozen West Coast conservation groups in a lawsuit they filed Wednesday.
The lawsuit, in the U.S. District Court in Portland, asks the court to require the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to take legal steps to protect the Pacific, river, western brook and Kern brook species of lamprey.
Lamprey were once common in some slow-moving waterways in the southern Willamette Valley, but now are rare, according to a 2002 study.
