IRS Rules State Farm Agents Are Independent
In a decision awaited by agents and companies alike, the Internal Revenue Service has determined that a State Farm agent is an independent contractor, not a company employee.
Though the final paperwork on the decision was not available at this writing, an IRS official confirmed that the independent status of State Farm's 17,000 producers had been upheld, validating a long-held company position.
It was a defeat for veteran State Farm agent Joseph Kelly, who claimed in his filing with the IRS that because he doesn't own his business, he cannot be truly independent.
