In Baum's fantasy world, nobody worried about yellow paint peeling off the Road to Oz. The Mayor of Munchkinland didn't fret about how the bricks would hold up in harsh winters, and never had to advertise for sealed bids for road work.
And the sheen never wore off what was - in the 1939 movie version, at least - a winding trail of shimmering, glimmering gold.
But here in the real world of Chittenango, self-proclaimed Birthplace of Oz, the yellow brick road wears out from the onslaught of snow, rain, tires and shoes.
