The workhorse of North American vehicle platforms carried a bigger load than usual last year.
General Motors built 1.84 million vehicles off its big truck platform in 2003. The platform is the foundation for Chevrolet and GMC full-sized pickups and SUVs. (See table at left.)
Those 1.8 million vehicles amounted to 11.7 percent of all light vehicles built in North America. That's up from 10.3 percent in 2002 and 9.9 percent in 2001.
Production of the trucks has grown steadily in recent years as sales have increased and as GM has spun new nameplates off the platform. Among them: the Hummer H2.
