CHAMPAGNE . . .
Use of the word "champagne" versus "sparkling wine" is addressed in this issue as a result of a survey undertaken by Wines & Vines.
The decision to make a survey was prompted by the increased number of champagne makers with European ownership who call their product "sparkling wine" in deference to the French position that "champagne" can only come from the Champagne District of France.
The survey asked of leading producers if they labeled their product sparkling wine or champagne, their reasons for doing so, their opinion as to the marketing values of champagne versus sparkling wine, if they contemplate changing their labels from ...
