Said national security adviser Condoleezza Rice of the new Iraqi interim government, "These are not America's puppets."
No, they are not. In a display of independence that might be a portent of things to come, the Iraqis rejected U.S. attempts to install a puppet. In a show of independence, the old U.S.-appointed governing council dissolved itself as soon as the new leaders were named.
And therein might be both problem and promise for the Bush White House.
The new interim president is Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer, who has been an outspoken critic of the U.S. occupation. Even so, he does not seem anti-American -- and in fact has studied in this ...
