Local radio tends to conjure up images of fun-days, promotions in shopping centres and DJs in the same vein as Steve Coogan's fictional Alan Partridge.

But former Jazz FM chief executive Richard Wheatly claims to see more than that. The Local Radio Company (LRC), headed by Wheatly, last week agreed to acquire Radio Investments and its sales house, First Radio Sales, for about 40m [pounds sterling] from GWR (which owns Classic FM), Guardian Media Group (which acquired Jazz FM in 2002) and Caledonia Investments.
