Variations on a Theme by
Ammons and Li Po
Last night on the National Geographic Channel
I watched an hour-long program
about the mountains of Hawaii. Bright green
in the extreme, and all the way to the top--
like lime snow cone syrup, that green,
or like deep expensive jade along the base
and up among the cliffs
and the sharp, ridgelike peaks--
small trees and ferns
and a fecund sort of moss that covers everything.
Jade Mountain then call it, this place
where I dwell. My house is halfway up
and on the west side. And when the sun
is overhead, the white butterflies
sprinkle themselves on my porch
assailing the wild ...
