THE French boast of vintage champagne, while the English turn out 'sparkling wine'.
They say the genuine article can only come from the Champagne region, while ours trickles out of obscure vineyards in South Coast counties.
But when it comes to taste, the French have just taken an historic beating.
A panel of professional wine tasters has awarded bottles of English bubbly higher marks than the French original.
In a test set up by the Consumer Association, 18 English sparkling wines plus a bottle of French Premier Cru Champagne Brut from Tesco were given to the panel of experts.
