So far, dire predictions about the spread of mad cow disease in U.S. cattle herds have proved inaccurate. The one case of mad cow on a dairy farm in the state of Washington, disclosed six months ago, remains the only confirmed U.S. case.
But that's no excuse for the U.S. Agriculture Department to fall asleep at its post as the agency in charge of guarding against mad cow disease. Department Secretary Ann Veneman must take whatever steps are necessary to wake the department up to the need to address mad cow concerns adequately.
