Marie Wilson Hare was born in Strathadam, near Newcastle, New Brunswick on August 31, 1909, the second youngest of 13 children. Marie told me of the long winter nights around the kitchen stove when family and neighbors would gather to sing. She was raised on a mix of local Miramichi songs, ballads and songs more widely known throughout lumbering communities, and popular songs of the day. Marie's passion for song was reinforced when she married Perley Hare, an exquisite singer in his own right, although he chose to stay in the background as Marie gained the attention of both folklorists and folk song enthusiasts.
