The New Industry Creation Hatchery Center (NICHe) at Tohoku University was established in April 1998 with the aim of developing innovative technologies to create new industries that will vitalize local and national economies. Esashi Masayoshi heads the NICHe team in charge of micro integration and MEMS, the total market for which systems reached $1.7 billion in 2002 and is expected to grow to over $7 billion by 2005 (MEMS Investor Journal).
