This article analyzes the determinants of foreign direct investment and its efficacy in promoting development in India. It examines the reasons for the relatively low volumes of foreign direct invesment in India. It argues that the volume of foreign direct invesment a country is able to attract is a function of its structure, stage of development, sources of foreign direct invesment it has access to and the volume of cooperant factors it possesses.
