A 29-year veteran of the Denver police SWAT team who signed up to train police recruits in Iraq was killed over the weekend when his convoy was ambushed by insurgents.
Retired officer D. Bruce Tow, 54, left for Iraq in February with DynCorp to help the country rebuild its police force, a task that suited his skills and personality, those close to him said.
His reason for going was simple: He wanted the Iraqi people to know American freedom.
