HOPES for a US Triple Crown winner were dashed again on Saturday when `America's Horse' Smarty Jones faltered in the final furlong of the Belmont Stakes as 36-1 outsider Birdstone came with a late run to win by a length.
The spoiler was ridden by Edgar Prado, who two years ago won the mile-and-a-half Belmont with 70-1 chance Sarava when War Emblem was the horse going for the Triple Crown. "He told me: `I'm sorry'," Smarty Jones's rider Stewart Elliott said in the post-race interview.
