State Farm Agents Ruled Independent
In a decision awaited by agents and companies alike, the Internal Revenue Service has determined that a State Farm agent is an independent contractor, not a company employee.
An IRS official confirmed that the independent status of State Farm's 17,000 producers had been upheld, validating a long-held company position.
It was a defeat for veteran State Farm agent Joseph Kelly, who claimed in his filing with the IRS that because he doesn't own his business, he cannot be truly independent.
