Jun. 6--Gasoline prices in Rhode Island have spiked to an average of $2.14 a gallon, up 60 cents, or 38 percent, from a year ago. They may stay high this summer, even after crude oil fell back to $38.49 a barrel on Friday after OPEC decided to raise production by 2 million barrels daily starting on July 1.

All that has left Rhode Islanders grumbling at the pump.

But consider the people overseas.

Motorists in Britain last week paid an average of $5.79 per gallon for what they call petrol. Some stations were charging as much as $6.31 for a gallon of gas, according to the Automobile Association there.
