May 30--SAN DIEGO -- San Diego County could soon be crawling with menacing pests and burdened by an increasing number of costly agricultural quarantines because of a $600,000 funding cut proposed by the state, county officials say.
County and agriculture leaders said last week that the cut, while relatively minor, threatens San Diego County's $1.2 billion agricultural industry.
"It's only $600,000, but it cuts our high-risk pest exclusion program by 82 percent," said Bob Copper, director of the county's land-use and environmental group.
