Jun. 4--FORT WORTH, Texas -- In a month of strong sales growth for retailers, Pier 1 Imports and Bombay Co. were striking exceptions to the rule.
The home-furnishings chains said sales at stores open at least a year fell from last May's levels, in contrast to the better-than-forecast results reported by department stores and clothing merchants.
Pier 1 blamed lackluster Mother's Day and Memorial Day promotions, with the weakness most pronounced in the Northeast and Midwest, for its 7.6 percent drop in same-store sales. Bombay had a 16 percent decline, as ...
