WITHOUT Charles Haughey, Ireland's political life may be more straightforward. it will certainly be less fun to watch. On January 30th he bowed to the inevitable and announced that he would be giving up the prime ministership on February 6th, by which time his Fianna Fail party may have fixed up a successor. Mr Haughey was caught in the end by a ten-year-old scandal concerning the bugging by the police of two journalists' telephones. All those years he had denied knowledge of it. Nobody really believed his denials-" It's just Charlie, at it again," they sighed-until on January 21st the man who was then justice minister, and took the rap, brought his old boss down.
