Thirty years ago, German wines were all the rage, universally adored by the British public, and brands such as Blue Nun and Black Tower were bestsellers. Today, their reputation could not be worse, with the perception of sweet wines with gum-numbing acidity.
Incredibly, Liebfraumilch is virtually unknown within its native country, yet still accounts for around 30 per cent of German wine exports to the UK. Its popularity, though, is generally confined to the over-60s and as this generation dies out, so will the demand.
