Army Unveils Smart Weapon
The U.S. Army has revealed the existence of a previously classified ground-launched "smart" weapon designed to autonomously seek, identify, and destroy tanks and other armored vehicles deep within enemy territory. The antiarmor submunition, known as the Bat, is a 36-inch-long 5.5-inch-diameter unpowered projectile that uses a nose-mounted infrared sensor and four spike-borne acoustic sensors to home in on ground targets. The 44pound self-guided weapon carries a conventional tandem shaped-charge warhead.
