Kwame Kwei-Armah, 37, was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex as Ian Roberts.
He adopted his current name when he traced his family tree back to its African origins in 1989.
Always interested in acting, as a child he studied at the Barbara Speake stage school.
After a bit part in Grange Hill, he won a role in a 1994 episode of Casualty, playing a character who'd been the victim of a racial assault.
