Go to the garden section in any bookstore and you'll find shelves crammed with volumes that promise to help you re-create Eden, grow the perfect tree or add seductive flowers to your beds.
The problem is, many of the authors of those books are writing about lush wildflower gardens in Texas or thick bluegrass in the Northeast. Here in Colorado, where the soil is heavy with clay or lightweight with sand, your own garden is your best teacher. Spend time on your hands and knees, experimenting with color and texture, shade and sunlight.
