Byline: KYLE TUCKER THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT
CHESAPEAKE -- He's not Ryan Pond.
His 6-foot-2 frame moves with the awkwardness of adolescence. He has spotty whiskers on his chin. He's still raw, still learning.
He's Matt Olson, the unexpected savior of Western Branch High School's baseball season.
"If not for him, we may not have been anywhere," Bruins coach Jim Stanko said. "We may not have made our district tournament."
As it is, Western Branch is facing Hermitage in tonight's Group AAA state quarterfinals.
"He put us on his shoulders," Stanko said.
