The sound of screeching tires in front of Erva Hance's farm means her azaleas are in full bloom.
"When you see them from the road, they're iridescent," said Hance of rural Buffalo. "People slow down on the county road to take a look."
It's no wonder. The shrub's exotically shaped, vibrantly colored blossoms look like something you'd see growing in Hawaii, not Minnesota.
For Hance, however, azaleas are more than just pretty flowers. She and her husband, Ed, have been growing and selling azaleas for more than 20 years at their Snyder-Hance Nursery. And unlike most Minnesota gardeners - who have been ...
