NEW YORK _ Katherine Dunham possesses the imperial elegance and radiance of a woman who has always been beautiful and held the light of center stage.
"My job, I think now, is to make a useful legacy," she says, propped up against an ivory mountain of pillows, bejeweled in strands of Ghana amber and a thick cuff of white, cut shells. "And that legacy is more than being just a dancer."
