This year has been a good one for specialty sporting goods shops and large discount retailers.

Although 1991 sales figures aren't available yet, these shop owners and store managers say they've bucked the trend of poor retail sales during the recession.

The latest figures from the state Board of Equalization show that average sales per outlet for sporting goods in San Diego County were up 7 percent in 1990 from 1989. Sporting goods sales ranked third in the county when compared with sales growth at other types of specialty stores. Photography-related sales ranked first (up 10.1 percent) and books and stationery ranked second (up 8.4 percent) in 1990.
