THE Cote d'Azur was the first strip of coast to be given a name and recognised as the world's foremost holiday playground.
It wasn't merely blue, it was azure, a subtle difference - although the luxury train that served it was called the Blue Train.
None of the Cotes or Costas that came after it have been half as glamorous as it still was when in penurious youth I set out to walk from Cannes to Monte Carlo, with a bit of help from friendly motorists or the cheap coastal train.
