Jun. 11--ESPANOLA, N.M. -- For years, residents of Velarde have endured what they call an eyesore that was created when a property owner mined away his part of a mountain there, but by next week they could begin to see some relief.
The other part of the mountain is on state trust land controlled by the state Land Office, which has been grappling with the issue for years. At a public meeting on Thursday, the Land Office announced that it has awarded a five-year contract to a Santa Fe company to mine its part of the mountain.
