MOROCCO
A critical year for the kingdom
MOROCCO ended 1991 in better condition that at the start of the year. There were dividends from King Hassan's decision to side with long-standing GCC and Western allies during the Gulf conflict -- in the face of Maghrebi popular opinion which mobilised behind Iraqi President Saddam Hussain. Economic restructuring continued, with the balance of payments being brought under control and foreign reserves recovering.
