In recent months there has been increasing discussion of the science, or lack of it, that underlies many regulations intended to benefit consumers.

Such questions, while technical, are of great practical importance: Only if we can be sure about the scientific basis for safety, health, and other regulation can we have confidence that it will do more good than harm. If the process is driven by political, policy, or media concerns, rather than by science, consumers can actually be injured by the outcomes.
