The eggs lie hidden away in one of the most desolate regions in Russia. For hours, the incubator is untroubled by movement. Then, suddenly, a crack appears at the top of an egg. Like a fault line, it spreads across the shell as the egg begins to rattle - and a tiny chick breaks out.
It is a familiar scene and one that would be unremarkable, were it not for the fact that the hatchling is a great bustard, the world's heaviest flying bird and one that has not been seen in Britain for 170 years.
