So what is the European Parliament? It's the democratic bit of the European Union, the only directly-elected EU institution.
Where does it fit in? The EU civil service, which is known as the European Commission, proposes legislation in the form of EU Directives.
The Council of Ministers -regular meetings of government ministers from all the member states -make the final decisions. But increasingly, the laws which are passed have to get approval from Euro-MPs.
