NEW YORK (FNS) -- Men-s wear posted the biggest gains for J.C. Penney Co. in January and for the entire fiscal year.

"The men's division was the number-one, followed closely by women's" said a company spokesman commenting on January sales.

J.C. Penney recorded an overall sales gain of 8.5 percent in January and a same-store increase of 7.3 percent. Leading the men's wear gains, according to the spokesman, were young men's sportswear, dress shirts, sport coats, suits, and Levi's Dockers.

Most other retailers also cited solid gains in men's apparel in what turned out to be a strong, although highly promotional, sales month.
