Juicy Prospects for Orange Juice Imports

Based on past experience with market liberalization, Japan's orange juice imports may rise rapidly this spring after import quotas are removed on April 1. When quotas were lifted for apple, grape and other fruit juices in April 1990, imports soared much higher than actual demand level, although normal supply and demand patterns generally return within a year. Annual per capita consumption of all fruit juices in Japan in 1990 was 4.3 liters. With an estimated population of 120 million, Japan has an estimated total fruit juice consumption of 516 million liters or 103,000 metric tons on a 5:1 concentrate basis. ...
