The Century of Progress Chicago World's Fair was set on Chicago's lakefront in 1933 and 1934 - 70 years ago. Thirty-nine million people visited the fair in its two-year run.
The fair was timed to commemorate the founding of Chicago in 1833, but the fair's purpose was broader than this. It was intended to demonstrate the benefits of science and technology for humankind. Exhibits educated visitors about advancements of the past, present and future. The fair was also meant to entertain and enthrall visitors and to stimulate the economies of Chicago and the nation.
