Most Americans are disturbed to see protesters deliberately desecrating the nation's flag. Nearly as disturbing is to see politicians wrapping themselves in it. The latter is a more common sight these days - it's an election year, and the threadbare idea of amending the U.S. Constitution to protect the flag is being rolled out once again.
The anti-desecration amendment is sponsored by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., proving that no party has a monopoly on bad ideas. Their proposal is in response to U.S. Supreme Court rulings that the destruction of an American flag is a constitutionally protected ...
