May 26--STEWART AIRPORT, N.Y. -- Responding to recent reports about Stewart International Airport, the State Department of Transportation defended its role at the airport at yesterday's Stewart Airport Commission meeting.

Steve Lewis, the DOT's director of passenger transportation, talked about two audits released last week by Comptroller Alan Hevesi. The audits said the DOT should better monitor the airport and keep better records of airport projects.

"I have no problem assuring that future projects will have records maintained appropriately," Lewis told the commission yesterday.
