May 24--More than half of the $22 million collected last year on three regional toll roads operated by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission was eaten up by expenses, including toll collector salaries that ranged as high as $72,000.
Operating the 65 miles of toll road expansion projects was not cheap, even though the highways are mostly new and despite widespread use of automated toll collection equipment.
Expenses for the Beaver Valley Expressway, Greensburg Bypass and Mon-Fayette Expressway were $12 million last year, a review of finances by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette determined.
