IT WILL COST [pounds sterling]350m and take nine years to build. It will present huge challenges for the engineers designing it and bring 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunities for advances in materials technology in sectors such as aerospace. It is the Diamond synchrotron--the UK's biggest research project for 30 years, yet one with a profile in inverse proportion to its massive scale.
