WHEN Nicaragua got rid of its far-left Sandinist government in 1990, it acquired a deeply Christian president and hoped that money would flow in from the United States. One result is an unexpected flow of private foreign investment. Thomas Monaghan, founder and owner of Domino's Pizza, an American firm that claims to be the world's largest deliverer of dough with toppings, is helping to put $4m into a new cathedral for Managua, Nicaragua's capital.
Some American Catholics agree with Nicaragua's Sandinist faithful that the country has better ways to use $4m. Liturgists would prefer the new cathedral to have the twin spires usual in Spanish-colonial church ...
