EVEN if we were not descendants of Rizal, my brother and I would still be his admirers because our Guerrero grandparents, die-hard Rizal fans, would tell us bedtime stories about the national hero. Early in the 20th century, when Grandma Filomena was a co-ed at the Liceo de Manila, she was crowned Esperanza de la Patria after winning a declamation contest of the Ultimo Adios. How elated she must have been when, years later, her daughter Carmen (my mother) married one of Rizals grand nephews, Ismael Cruz (my father).
