May 2--Shockwaves have been sent though Spain's banking system on news that Banco Santander Central Hispano chairman Emilio Botin is to stand trial on charges of misusing bank funds to resolve a 1999 power struggle in the bank.

Botin, Spain's most powerful banker, has been charged along with two other bank executives with misappropriation of the bank's funds. Banco Santander is Spain's biggest bank and the world's 13th largest. Botin's family have been involved with the bank since it was founded in 1857. He took over as chairman from his father in 1986 when the bank was a small entity.
