High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a disorder in which there is increased resistance to the pressure of blood passing through the blood vessels. More than 60 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure. Some of the consequences of this condition include heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.
Treatment of hypertension is clearly worthwhile: Death caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke has dramatically declined in the United States over the past few decades.
