SCUTTLING across the hot sand, its tail arched over its back ready to sting, the sight of a scorpion will bring a shudder to the hardiest holidaymaker.

But there was always the comforting thought that it was too cold for them back home in Britain. There'd be no scorpions in the garden or hiding in the kitchen.

Not any more. The little beasts are soon to become a regular hazard of the British summer, thriving in our warmer climate and inadvertently spread around by collectors.

There are few natural predators in this country to check their progress either.
